Sonay Kartal reaches first WTA 1000 final with Wuhan win over Ostapenko
Sonay Kartal reached her first WTA 1000 final by beating Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) at the Wuhan Open on Saturday. BBC Sport reported that the British player saved six set points across the semifinal, recovering from 4-1 down in each set to defeat the former French Open champion.
Watch the highlights:
Ostapenko established a double-break advantage in the opening set but could not finish it when serving at 5-4 or 6-5. Kartal survived three set points before taking the tie-break. The second set brought another recovery and three more saved set points, with Kartal again winning the breaker despite Ostapenko producing 50 winners and nine aces across the match.
The result also carries a rankings reward. According to BBC Sport, Kartal will return to the top 50 and become British number one when Monday's rankings are released. She entered the event ranked 170th. At the time of that report, her opponent in Sunday's final was still to be decided between Iga Swiatek and Maja Chwalinska.
The WTA's account places the achievement within a comeback that began last month after six months out with a back injury. Kartal, 24, had been ranked 54th before the lay-off. Since returning, she has played for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup and reached the third round in Beijing, where she beat Wang Xinyu. Wuhan is her third event back.
Her route through Wuhan has included victories over Anhelina Kalinina, Belinda Bencic and Jasmine Paolini, followed by a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 quarterfinal win against Elina Svitolina. The WTA reported that beating the world number six was Kartal's second career victory over a top-10 opponent and her first win against Svitolina in three meetings. The Ostapenko result secured her second tour-level final.
Kartal told the WTA she had been ready to return in late August but followed advice not to rush her recovery. She described trusting her physiotherapist and support team while preparing for competition, despite the disappointment of missing Wimbledon. She also said the speed at which her playing level had returned surprised her, with confidence building as she played more matches.
