Somerset Take County Championship Lead After Crushing Glamorgan

Somerset moved to the top of County Championship Division One with an innings victory over Glamorgan, strengthening their pursuit of a first title in the competition. The Guardian's county cricket review reported that Lewis Gregory's team completed the win in a little more than two and a half sessions, leaving Glamorgan fifth and still involved in a crowded relegation battle.

The leaders shared the work across the side rather than relying on one dominant performance. Five Somerset bowlers took wickets, with none claiming more than five, while six batters reached at least 41. Tom Lammonby produced the highest score of the innings with 95 as Somerset assembled the total that underpinned their comfortable victory.

Nottinghamshire, who had led the division, were unable to match that result in a rain-affected draw with Leicestershire. Jack Haynes and Liam Patterson-White scored centuries and added 257 for the sixth wicket, putting the defending champions in a position to press for victory. Leicestershire were 23 for two midway through the match but mounted an extended lower-order resistance.

Nightwatchman Josh Hull, who had scored only 23 runs since the beginning of June, batted for five hours and made 97. Tom Scriven then reached 50, while number 11 Josh Davey finished one run short of his own half-century. Their last-wicket stand lasted nearly two and a half hours and secured the draw for Leicestershire.

Those two results left Nottinghamshire four points behind Somerset at the top. Leicestershire remained in danger at the other end of the table but moved to within seven points of safety. The narrow margins at both ends mean Somerset's lead is significant without settling the title race, while the draw could also prove important in Leicestershire's attempt to stay in Division One.

Elsewhere, Sussex beat Essex by 47 runs after James Coles scored 79 in the second innings and returned match figures of seven for 105. Henry Crocombe recorded his second hat-trick in consecutive matches. Essex fell to seventh, adding further pressure to a relegation contest that also includes Yorkshire and Leicestershire as the County Championship season approaches its final stage.
