Somerset Seize Control Against Glamorgan in County Championship

Somerset took firm control of their County Championship Division One match against Glamorgan at Taunton, bowling the visitors out for 194 before reaching 92 without loss by stumps. BBC Sport, carrying a report supplied by the ECB Reporters’ Network, said the title-chasing hosts finished the opening day 102 runs behind with all 10 wickets intact.

Migael Pretorius led Somerset’s seam attack with figures of 3-45. Lewis Gregory returned 2-58, Craig Overton took 2-63 and Tom Lammonby claimed 2-27, while Jack Leach collected the final wicket. Glamorgan’s dismissals all came through catches behind the stumps, with Somerset’s slip fielders holding seven chances and wicketkeeper James Rew taking three.

Rain delayed the start by half an hour, but Glamorgan initially reached 33 before Asa Tribe edged Pretorius to Rew. Kiran Carlson then fell to Pretorius at 45-2, and Mason Crane was dismissed for 27 by Overton four runs later. Colin Ingram’s departure to Gregory left the visitors 80-4 at lunch after another brief interruption.

Ben Kellaway provided Glamorgan’s main resistance. He reached 50 from 81 balls but edged Pretorius to Henry Nicholls from the next delivery and departed for 51. Glamorgan soon slipped to 125-6 before the lower order added useful runs. Timm van der Gugten and Mir Hamza put on 36 for the final wicket, with Leach removing Hamza to end the innings.

Further rain delayed Somerset’s reply, and conditions were still favorable to the bowlers when the hosts began batting under floodlights. Openers Josh Thomas and Lammonby survived a cautious start before accelerating. Thomas struck three consecutive fours from Hamza in the sixth over, and the pair completed a 50 partnership in 11.1 overs.

Lammonby edged van der Gugten just short of first slip when he was on 19, but that proved a rare alarm for Somerset. Thomas closed unbeaten on 46 and Lammonby on 37, the pair having shared 12 boundaries. Somerset collected three points on the day while Glamorgan took none, strengthening the hosts’ position as they pursue the first County Championship title in their history.
