Somerset Seize Control Against Glamorgan in Championship Title Push

Somerset took firm control of their County Championship Division One match against Glamorgan at Taunton, bowling the visitors out for 194 before closing the opening day on 92 without loss. BBC Sport, carrying a report supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, said Migael Pretorius led the home attack with 3-45 as Somerset secured three points from the day while Glamorgan collected none.

Rain delayed the start by 30 minutes before Somerset chose to field in overcast conditions on a green-tinged surface. Glamorgan initially reached 33, but Asa Tribe edged Pretorius to wicketkeeper James Rew, who completed a low diving catch. Kiran Carlson then fell to Pretorius at 45-2, and Mason Crane was caught at second slip for 27 with the total on 49.

Colin Ingram's dismissal left Glamorgan 80-4 at lunch, but Ben Kellaway gave the innings some resistance. He reached 50 from 81 balls with a series of drives before edging the next delivery from Pretorius to Henry Nicholls. Former Somerset batter Sean Dickson followed soon afterwards on his 35th birthday, caught in the slips off Lewis Gregory as Glamorgan slipped to 125-6.

Somerset's seamers shared nine wickets. Alongside Pretorius, Gregory returned 2-58, Craig Overton took 2-63 and Tom Lammonby claimed 2-27. Somerset's slip fielders held seven catches, with Nicholls and Tom Abell taking three apiece and Overton adding another, while Rew completed three catches behind the stumps.

Timm van der Gugten and Mir Hamza added 36 for the final wicket, with Van der Gugten hitting a six, before Jack Leach removed Hamza for the only wicket taken by spin. Further rain delayed Somerset's reply, but openers Josh Thomas and Lammonby negotiated the conditions and accelerated after a careful start. Thomas struck three consecutive fours from Hamza in the sixth over.

Thomas finished unbeaten on 46 and Lammonby was 37 not out, the pair having shared 12 boundaries by the close. Their unbroken stand brought Somerset to within 102 runs of Glamorgan's total with all 10 wickets intact, completing a dominant day for a side chasing its first County Championship title.
