Somerset seize control after bowling Glamorgan out for 194

Somerset took a firm grip on their County Championship Division One match against Glamorgan at Taunton, closing the opening day on 92 without loss after dismissing the visitors for 194. The home side ended 102 runs behind with all 10 first-innings wickets intact after 23 overs.

BBC Sport reported that Somerset's slip fielders held seven catches during Glamorgan's innings, while wicketkeeper James Rew completed the other three dismissals. Migael Pretorius led the bowling figures with 3-45 from 16 overs, supported by two wickets apiece for Lewis Gregory, Craig Overton and Tom Lammonby. Jack Leach took the final wicket with his second delivery.

Glamorgan lost Asa Tribe for 16 with the score on 33, then slipped to 49-3 as captain Kiran Carlson and Mason Crane followed. Ben Kellaway provided the main resistance, making 51 from 82 balls with nine fours, but his departure left the visitors 123-5. Sean Dickson was dismissed two runs later as Somerset maintained control.

The visitors were 158-9 after Lammonby removed Dan Douthwaite for 18 and Connor O'Riordan without scoring. Timm van der Gugten, unbeaten on 22, and Mir Hamza then added 36 for the final wicket before Rew caught Hamza off Leach. Every Glamorgan batter was dismissed by a catch, according to the official scorecard.

Somerset's reply was assured despite a brief interruption. Josh Thomas finished unbeaten on 46 from 83 balls, striking eight fours, while Lammonby reached 37 not out from 59 deliveries with four boundaries. Their stand carried Somerset to the close at a run rate of four per over without giving Glamorgan a breakthrough.

The result of the first day strengthened Somerset's position in a closely contested title race. The Guardian's live coverage listed Somerset second in Division One on 144 points at the start of play, four behind Nottinghamshire.
