Somerset beat Leicestershire by 377 runs to stay ahead in county title race

Somerset maintained their lead in the County Championship title race with a 377-run victory over Leicestershire, collecting 22 points as Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire also won. The Guardian's county cricket roundup reported that Warwickshire now sit just four points behind Somerset and one behind Nottinghamshire, keeping three teams closely grouped at the top of the table.

Josh Thomas and Tom Lammonby supplied the foundation for Somerset's win with an opening partnership of 181, scored at five runs an over. Leicestershire's entire first innings then finished 24 runs short of that stand, with five Somerset bowlers taking wickets. The openers put together another substantial partnership in the second innings and were not separated until Somerset's overall advantage had reached 317.

Somerset's experienced bowling core completed the result. Lewis Gregory, Craig Overton and Jack Leach shared nine wickets in Leicestershire's second innings, helping finish the match with a day to spare. All three have long associations with the county: Gregory made his Somerset debut in 2011, while Overton and Leach first appeared the following year, according to the Guardian.

Nottinghamshire kept up the pressure by beating Hampshire at Trent Bridge, although the visitors created an opportunity to upset the defending champions. Joe Clarke made a century and Liam Patterson-White contributed 92 for Nottinghamshire, while Jake Lehmann scored 133 for Hampshire. Manny Lumsden's five for 36 then left Hampshire chasing 178, before Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington led the bowling response that denied them victory.

Warwickshire recorded a second consecutive win by dismissing Glamorgan for 69 and 65. Captain Ed Barnard returned match figures of eight for 18 and also scored 51, with Chris Woakes taking one wicket. Glamorgan conceded 41 extras during a match in which their combined batting total was only 134. The result moved Warwickshire to within a single point of second-placed Nottinghamshire.

Warwickshire's remaining programme takes them away to Essex before a home match against Leicestershire. Essex are eight points clear of the relegation places after losing to Yorkshire, whose attack dismissed them for 171 and 113, with Kuldeep Yadav taking 10 wickets in the match. Somerset's victory therefore affected both ends of the standings, while the wins for their nearest challengers left the championship unresolved.
