Somerset crush Leicestershire by 377 runs to sustain title charge

Somerset strengthened their pursuit of a first County Championship title by beating Leicestershire by 377 runs inside three days at Grace Road. The ECB Reporters’ Network, published by BBC Sport, reported that Somerset collected 22 points from their third win in four matches, while Leicestershire took three points from the game.

Somerset declared their second innings on 316 for five after captain Lewis Gregory allowed Henry Nicholls enough time to complete his first Championship century. Nicholls finished unbeaten on 100, accelerating from 50 to 100 in 34 deliveries and hitting four sixes in total. Tom Abell made 58 before being caught at silly mid-on.

The declaration set Leicestershire a target of 523. Somerset then dismissed the hosts for 145 in 45.1 overs, completing the match with more than a day remaining. The 377-run gap was Leicestershire’s largest defeat by Somerset and their fourth-biggest loss by runs in the county’s history, according to the match report.

Craig Overton led the bowling effort with four wickets for 33 runs, taking his season total to 49. Gregory struck twice before lunch as Leicestershire slipped to 10 for two, although the Somerset captain did not return after the interval because he was carrying an injury. Overton then removed Sheridon Gumbs, Hamza Shaikh, Stephen Eskinazi and Nick Kelly as the innings unravelled.

Jake Ball bowled Ben Mike, while Jack Leach accounted for Ajaz Patel, Ben Cox and Nathan Gilchrist. Cox top-scored for Leicestershire with 39, but the home side could not build the partnerships required to resist Somerset’s attack. Earlier, Somerset had made 363 in their first innings, with Josh Thomas scoring 100, before bowling Leicestershire out for 157.

The result leaves Somerset five points ahead of Warwickshire, whose innings victory over Glamorgan prevented the leaders from extending their advantage. Somerset’s final two fixtures are against Yorkshire at Headingley and Surrey at Taunton. Warwickshire travel to Essex before hosting Leicestershire, while third-placed Nottinghamshire face Sussex at Hove and then Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.
