Somerset crush Glamorgan to take County Championship lead

What happened: Somerset moved to the top of the County Championship Division One table after completing an innings-and-64-run victory over Glamorgan inside three days at Taunton. Somerset established control by making 441 in their only innings, with Tom Lammonby's 95 the top score. Glamorgan, who were dismissed for 194 first time around, resumed their second innings on 30-1 and were bowled out for 183. Asa Tribe led the resistance with 49, while former Somerset batter Sean Dickson made 47; Mason Crane had earlier taken 4-95 in Somerset's innings.

How it unfolded: Somerset struck soon after a brief rain delay when Migael Pretorius had Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson caught behind for a duck. Craig Overton then removed Ben Kellaway before Jack Leach dismissed Tribe, who had faced 108 balls and hit eight fours. Overton followed by having Colin Ingram caught behind, leaving Glamorgan 81-5.

Sean Dickson and Chris Cooke took their sixth-wicket partnership past 50, but the stand only delayed Somerset's progress. Cooke, who made 20 from 46 balls, hooked Overton to Josh Thomas at fine leg. Leach then trapped Dan Douthwaite lbw first ball, and Lewis Gregory removed Dickson for 47 with Tom Abell taking the catch at second slip.

Somerset's bowlers shared the workload. Leach finished with 3-46, Overton returned 3-29 and Gregory claimed 3-68, accounting between them for nine wickets. Gregory bowled Connor O'Riordan and completed the result when Timm van der Gugten was caught at cover at 14:40 BST.

Why it matters: The win strengthened Somerset's attempt to secure the first County Championship title in the club's history. Their 23-point return put pressure on fellow contenders Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire, although those rivals' results will determine the lasting effect on the standings.
