Somerset Take Control Against Glamorgan After Seamers Strike at Taunton

Somerset took control of their County Championship Division One match against Glamorgan by dismissing the visitors for 194 and closing the opening day on 92 without loss at Taunton. A report supplied by the ECB Reporters’ Network and published by BBC Sport said Somerset earned three points from a day that strengthened their position in the title race.

Migael Pretorius led the home attack with three wickets for 45 runs, while Lewis Gregory took 2-58, Craig Overton 2-63 and Tom Lammonby 2-27. Nine Glamorgan wickets fell to the seamers. Somerset’s slip cordon held seven catches, with Henry Nicholls and Tom Abell taking three apiece and Overton adding another, while wicketkeeper James Rew completed three dismissals.

Glamorgan had been asked to bat after rain delayed the start by 30 minutes. Asa Tribe fell with the score on 33 before Kiran Carlson and Mason Crane departed to leave the visitors 49-3. Colin Ingram then edged Gregory to Abell, sending Glamorgan into lunch on 80-4.

Ben Kellaway provided the innings’ main resistance, scoring 51 and reaching his half-century from 81 balls. He was removed by Pretorius with the next delivery. Glamorgan later slipped to 125-6, but a final-wicket partnership of 36 between Timm van der Gugten and Mir Hamza helped lift the total to 194. Jack Leach dismissed Hamza for the only wicket taken by spin.

Further rain delayed Somerset’s reply, and conditions remained favourable to bowling when play resumed under floodlights. Openers Josh Thomas and Lammonby survived the early period before accelerating. Thomas struck Hamza for three consecutive fours in the sixth over, and the pair completed a fifty partnership in 11.1 overs.

Thomas finished unbeaten on 46 and Lammonby was 37 not out, with the pair sharing 12 boundaries by stumps. Lammonby edged van der Gugten just short of first slip when he was on 19, but Glamorgan could not find a breakthrough. Somerset ended the day 102 runs behind with all ten first-innings wickets intact as they continued their pursuit of a first County Championship title.
