Somerset Build 252-Run Advantage as Essex Fight Back at Taunton
Somerset enforced the follow-on after dismissing Essex for 158 on day two at Taunton. Essex reached 59 without loss in their second innings but remained 252 runs behind.

Somerset ended the second day in a commanding position against Essex at Taunton, holding a 252-run advantage after enforcing the follow-on in their County Championship Division One match. Essex closed on 59 without loss in their second innings after being dismissed for 158 in reply to Somerset’s 469, according to the ECB Reporters’ Network report published by BBC Sport.

Watch the highlights:

Resuming on 348 for five, Somerset added 121 runs before being bowled out. James Rew finished unbeaten on 74 and passed 4,000 career runs, supporting a total built around Josh Thomas’s 110, Henry Nicholls’ 96 and Tom Abell’s 65. Essex bowlers Sam Cook and Shane Snater finished with four for 92 and three for 96 respectively.

Essex’s first innings then unravelled quickly. Somerset captain Lewis Gregory struck three times with his first eight deliveries and finished with three for 29, while England spinner Jack Leach returned four for 37. Matt Critchley made 50, but Essex were all out 311 runs behind and Somerset chose to send the visitors straight back in.

The decision to enforce the follow-on came despite Gregory suffering a hip injury when he fell on the ball while fielding. The problem prevented him from bowling in Essex’s second innings after his decisive opening spell had helped establish Somerset’s control of the match.

Dean Elgar and Paul Walter provided Essex with a steadier response on their second attempt. They negotiated 19 overs without losing a wicket, with Elgar unbeaten on 30 and Walter on 29 at the close. Elgar survived a caught-and-bowled opportunity offered to Jake Ball when he was on 12, but the opening pair otherwise limited Somerset’s chances during the final passage of play.

Somerset collected six bonus points to Essex’s two and strengthened their position as they pursue a first County Championship title. Essex’s unbeaten start to the second innings prevented further immediate damage, but the scale of the deficit means they still face a substantial task over the remaining two days to make Somerset bat again and save the match.
