Solheim Cup 2026 Brings Europe-USA Showdown to Netherlands for First Time

The 20th Solheim Cup begins on Friday, 11 September, with Europe hosting the United States at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt. BBC Sport's event preview confirms that the three-day match runs through Sunday, 13 September, bringing the leading women's team competition to the Netherlands for the first time.

The United States arrives as the defending champion after beating Europe 15.5-12.5 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia in 2024. That result ended a run of three editions without an American victory: Europe won in 2019 and 2021 before retaining the trophy through a 14-14 tie in Spain in 2023. The official 2026 event site lists the overall series at 11 wins for the United States, seven for Europe and one tie.

Europe is captained by Sweden's Anna Nordqvist, a three-time major champion and veteran of 10 Solheim Cups as a player. Angela Stanford leads the United States after six playing appearances and three previous assignments as an assistant captain. Their teams each contain 12 players, with both leaders combining automatic qualifiers and captain's selections.

Who is playing

Europe's lineup is Charley Hull, Esther Henseleit, Lottie Woad, Maja Stark, Celine Boutier, Carlota Ciganda, Linn Grant, Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Leona Maguire, Julia Lopez Ramirez, Nastasia Nadaud and Mimi Rhodes. Nordqvist used her four captain's picks on Maguire, Lopez Ramirez, Nadaud and Rhodes.

The American team consists of Nelly Korda, Angel Yin, Jennifer Kupcho, Yealimi Noh, Auston Kim, Lauren Coughlin, Allisen Corpuz, Andrea Lee, Alison Lee, Lindy Duncan, Megan Khang and Rose Zhang. Stanford selected Duncan, Khang and Zhang with her three captain's picks. The official event roster shows a blend of established Solheim Cup performers and debutants on both sides.

Why it matters

Home advantage has been a recurring force in the competition, but Bernardus presents unfamiliar ground for both teams. The Kyle Phillips-designed championship course opened in 2018 and hosted the Dutch Open on the men's European circuit in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Staging the event there gives Dutch golf its largest women's team showcase and creates a new tactical test rather than returning the match to a familiar venue.

The contest also offers Europe an immediate opportunity to reclaim the trophy. The 2023 tie was enough for Europe to retain it under match-play rules, but the United States won outright a year later. Because the Americans hold the cup, Europe must reach at least 14.5 points to take it back; a 14-14 draw would allow the United States to retain it.

Tournament format

The Solheim Cup comprises 28 matches worth one point each, with a tied match worth half a point. Friday and Saturday each feature four foursomes and four fourballs, distributing eight points per day. Sunday's concluding session contains 12 singles matches, meaning the final day accounts for nearly half of the available points and can rapidly change the scoreboard.

Foursomes require partners to alternate shots with one ball, placing a premium on compatible pairings and course management. In fourballs, both players complete each hole and the lower score counts, allowing captains to use aggressive combinations. Every player competes in singles, but the captains decide participation and pairings across the first four team sessions.

What to watch

The opening pairings will offer the first clues about each captain's strategy. Nordqvist must decide how to distribute experience around Europe's four debutants, while Stanford can build combinations around Korda and a deep group of returning American players. The balance between dependable pairings and in-form newcomers will shape the first 16 points before singles.

Bernardus itself should influence those choices. Players will need to adjust to a relatively young course and the potential effects of Dutch weather across three match-play days. Early control matters, but recent Solheim Cups have repeatedly shown that momentum can reverse quickly once Sunday's singles begin.
