Smith Ruled Out of WBC Super-Lightweight Title Defence Due to Injury
WBC super-lightweight champion Josh Smith has been forced to withdraw from his title defence after suffering an injury during training, throwing the division into uncertainty.

WBC super-lightweight champion Josh Smith has been ruled out of his highly anticipated title defence after sustaining an injury during training this week, the organization confirmed on Monday.

Watch the highlights:

Smith, 28, was scheduled to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Carlos Ferreira in what was billed as a legacy-defining bout for the American fighter. The injury, described as a Grade 2 ankle sprain by the fighter's medical team, occurred during a sparring session at his training facility in Las Vegas.

"This is devastating news for Josh and our entire team," said trainer Eddie Martinez in a statement. "He was in the best shape of his career and fully prepared for this fight. The timing couldn't be worse, but his health comes first."

The WBC has announced an emergency hearing to determine whether to order an interim title bout or grant Smith a medical exemption. Ferreira, who holds a 34-2 record with 28 knockouts, expressed disappointment but pledged to remain ready for whoever emerges.

Smith claimed the super-lightweight title in a stunning upset victory last October, stopping veteran champion Marcus Thompson in the ninth round. He successfully defended the belt once in February with a unanimous decision win over Miguel Reyes.

The injury comes at a critical juncture for Smith, who was reportedly negotiating a multi-fight deal with a major streaming platform. His absence leaves the 140-pound division without its top draw for the foreseeable future.

Former champions have weighed in on the situation, with several suggesting Smith may face pressure to return quickly. However, medical experts consulted by this publication advised caution, noting that rushing back from ankle injuries in boxing can lead to long-term mobility issues.

The WBC is expected to announce its decision within the next 48 hours regarding the division's immediate future.
