Smalley and Springer surge to lead Zurich Classic of New Orleans after opening round
The American pairing of Tyler Smalley and Justin Springer have claimed the first-round lead at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, posting a stellar 11-under-par 61 in four-ball format.

American duo Tyler Smalley and Justin Springer have surged to the first-round lead at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, carding an impressive 11-under-par 61 in the four-ball format at TPC Louisiana.

Watch the highlights:

The pair, who teamed up for the first time this week, got off to a flying start with six birdies on the front nine before adding five more on the back stretch to finish comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.

"We gelled really well out there today," Smalley said after the round. "Justin was dialled in with his iron play and I was able to roll in a few putts. The communication between us was excellent and we fed off each other's energy all day."

Springer echoed those sentiments, highlighting the chemistry that developed during their opening 18 holes. "The vibes between us have been great. We kept things loose and played free, which really showed in our score. This is only our first event together but you'd never know it from how we performed today."

The duo holds a two-stroke advantage over the nearest challengers heading into Friday's second round, which will switch to alternate-shot format before returning to four-ball on the weekend. Several high-profile pairings including recent PGA Tour winners and former major champions lurk within striking distance.

The Zurich Classic, now in its eighth year at TPC Louisiana, offers a unique team format that provides different challenges compared to standard stroke-play events. The course, designed by Steve Elkington and Mark McCumber, has been set up to offer scoring opportunities for the 80-team field.

Smalley and Springer will tee off in Friday's alternate-shot round with a clear objective: maintain their momentum and build on their advantage heading into the weekend.
