Skupski and Harrison win US Open doubles for second major title together

Neal Skupski and Christian Harrison won the US Open men's doubles championship, defeating Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the final. According to BBC Sport's Paul Battison, the British-American partnership completed its New York campaign without losing a set. The fifth seeds beat the sixth-seeded German team to collect their second Grand Slam title together.

The decisive opening-set moment came with the score at 3-3. Harrison struck a backhand down the line for a winner to earn a break and put his team ahead 4-3. That proved to be the only service break of the match. Skupski and Harrison maintained their advantage to take the first set, leaving Puetz and Krawietz needing to win the second to stay in contention.

Neither team broke serve in the second set, taking the final into a tie-break. A German return caught the net and left Harrison wrong-footed, helping Puetz and Krawietz reach set point. Skupski and Harrison survived that chance before earning a championship point of their own. Skupski finished the match with a smash at the net, then sank to his knees before embracing his partner.

The result followed two previous defeats for Skupski in the US Open men's doubles final. He and Wesley Koolhof lost the 2022 title match, while his appearance alongside Joe Salisbury last year ended in defeat after they had held three championship points. Speaking after this victory, Skupski described his shock at winning and recalled how difficult the previous year's loss had been.

Harrison and Skupski had already won the Australian Open in January, their first Grand Slam tournament as a team. They now have major titles from both Melbourne and New York in the same season. At Flushing Meadows, the crowd backed home player Harrison, with the noise rising inside Arthur Ashe Stadium as the pair moved towards victory.

For Skupski, the win brings his men's doubles Grand Slam tally to three. His earlier title came at Wimbledon in 2023 with Koolhof. He also won the Wimbledon mixed doubles championship with Desirae Krawczyk in 2021 and 2022, adding two further major trophies to his record.
