Sinner Masters Monte Carlo to Regain World Number One Ranking
Jannik Sinner completed a remarkable transition from hard courts to clay on Sunday, defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 6-3 to claim his first Monte Carlo Masters title and reclaim the world number one ranking in the process.
The Italian's victory completed a stunning start to the European clay-court season, adding the Prince's Trophy to the Indian Wells and Miami titles he claimed during the Sunshine Double last month. The 24-year-old becomes only the third player in the modern era, alongside Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, to win four consecutive ATP 1000 titles.
Alcaraz had made the brighter start, racing into a 2-0 lead in the first set with a break in the second game featuring two stunning forehands that had Sinner struggling to land his first serve. However, Sinner broke back immediately and the set turned into a tense affair filled with errors from both players.
The decisive tie-break went Sinner's way 7-5 after Alcaraz pushed a forehand into the net on the first set point, though the Italian had established a 5-2 lead only to squander the advantage. Sinner's delayed serving rhythm had found its groove by this stage.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Alcaraz carved out two break points in the opening game but Sinner survived, then broke to level. The pivotal moment came in the sixth game when Sinner converted his third break point opportunity, then repeated the feat two games later to establish a 5-3 lead he served out without alarm.
Sinner, who has now won 17 consecutive matches and becomes the first man since Djokovic in 2015 to claim the first three ATP 1000 titles of the season, admitted the result meant more than the ranking itself.
'Getting back to number one means a lot to me,' Sinner said. 'But the ranking is secondary. I'm very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface. I haven't done it before, so it means a lot to me.'
The result improves Sinner's career record against Alcaraz to 7-10, with the Italian having prevailed in their most recent meeting at the ATP Finals in November. Alcaraz will slide to second in the rankings on Monday, though the two are separated by fewer than 500 points with the European clay-court season still in its early stages.
