Sinner Edges Alcaraz in Monte Carlo Final to Reclaim ATP Top Ranking
Jannik Sinner has done it again. The Italian defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in the Monte Carlo Masters final on Sunday to capture his third ATP 1000 title of the season and reclaim the world No 1 ranking from his Spanish rival.
It was a statement victory from the 24-year-old, who has now won 17 consecutive matches and becomes just the third player in the modern era — after Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal — to win four successive ATP 1000 titles, having also triumphed in Paris last autumn.
The match itself was a classic between the two young stars who have defined the new generation of men's tennis. Alcaraz raced to a 2-0 first-set lead, converting his first break point with two thundering forehands that left Sinner scrambling. But the Italian responded immediately, breaking back and taking control of a see-sawing set that featured a string of unforced errors from both men.
Sinner found his serving rhythm too late for Alcaraz to capitalise. He dominated the tie-break, racing to 5-2 before a nervy sequence gave Alcaraz hope. A netted forehand on set point extended the drama, but a double-fault from Alcaraz handed Sinner the opener.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Alcaraz earned two break points in the opening game but couldn't convert either. Sinner then broke at the third time of asking in the sixth game, and again two games later to lead 5-3. He served out the match in two hours and 15 minutes.
Speaking on court, Sinner was modest about his historic achievement. "The result is amazing. Getting back to number one means a lot to me," he said. "As I always say, the ranking is secondary. I'm very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface. I haven't done it before, so it means a lot to me."
Sinner also paid tribute to Alcaraz, acknowledging the quality of their rivalry. "Today was very high-level from both of us," he added. "It was a bit windy, completely different conditions than the tournament until today."
With the win, Sinner returns to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday for the first time since the start of the year. He now has 7 wins from 17 career meetings against Alcaraz. His next challenge will be carrying this momentum onto clay as the European clay-court season builds towards the French Open.
