Shrewsbury takeover bid clears Scottish FA dual-ownership hurdle
The Scottish FA has approved dual interests involving Spartans and Shrewsbury Town as an American consortium pursues the English club. The takeover remains unfinished, with hopes of completion before Christmas.

An American consortium pursuing Shrewsbury Town has secured Scottish Football Association approval for interests spanning the English club and Spartans. Spartans confirmed the decision in a statement on 6 October, saying most regulatory aspects of the proposed acquisition had now been completed. The announcement concerns ownership and board roles at the two clubs, rather than confirmation that the sale has closed.

Watch the highlights:

The approval covers the consortium led by Spartans lead shareholder Scott Davidson and the appointment of Davidson, Will Dotson and Craig Graham as directors of both clubs. Spartans said it would provide further updates when able to do so. Its statement did not announce a completion date, leaving the timing of any final transfer of ownership unresolved despite this latest regulatory decision.

BBC Sport reported that the American group also includes Brad Friedel, the former Liverpool, Tottenham and Blackburn goalkeeper. The consortium has already passed due diligence and financial checks conducted by the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator, according to the BBC. Scottish approval addresses the additional issue created by Davidson's majority shareholding at Spartans, where Dotson and Graham are also involved.

The proposed purchase follows a lengthy effort to find a buyer for Shrewsbury. Chairman Roland Wycherley put the club on the market in 2024, but earlier negotiations did not produce a completed sale. BBC Sport reported that talks with one American buyer broke down in March 2025, before an approach from a different party also collapsed six months later.

Discussions with Davidson's consortium have been running for six months, with hopes that the transaction can be finalised before Christmas, the BBC reported. Completion would end Wycherley's 30 years as owner. The 85-year-old has nevertheless cautioned that the incoming owners will need time and patience after taking charge, drawing on his own experience of running the club.

For now, the distinction in Spartans' announcement remains important: Scottish FA permission has been granted for the cross-club interests, and the club describes the majority of regulatory work as complete. Neither point amounts to an announcement that Shrewsbury has changed hands. Further updates promised by Spartans will follow when the club is able to provide them.
