Shrewsbury takeover consortium receives Scottish FA dual-interest approval
The Scottish FA has approved shared interests involving Shrewsbury Town and Spartans. The decision clears another regulatory hurdle for the American consortium, but the acquisition has not been announced as complete.

The American consortium seeking to buy Shrewsbury Town has cleared another regulatory hurdle after the Scottish Football Association approved its interests in both the English club and Spartans. Spartans announced the decision on 6 October, saying most of the acquisition's regulatory work was now complete, with further updates still to come.

Watch the highlights:

According to BBC Sport, the group comprises Scott Davidson, Will Dotson, Craig Graham and former goalkeeper Brad Friedel. Friedel played for Liverpool, Tottenham and Blackburn. Davidson is already the majority shareholder at Spartans, while Dotson and Graham also have existing involvement with the Scottish League Two club, creating the dual-interest issue requiring approval.

The Spartans statement says the Scottish FA's approval covers the interests arising from the proposed Shrewsbury acquisition and the appointment of Davidson, Dotson and Graham as directors of both clubs. The announcement therefore addresses not only the ownership connection but also the three men's participation on the two club boards.

BBC Sport reported that the consortium had already passed the due-diligence and financial tests required by the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator. The Scottish decision adds to those earlier clearances. However, Spartans described the latest step as completing the majority of the regulatory process, rather than announcing that the takeover itself had been finalised.

The two clubs operate in separate national league systems: Shrewsbury are in England's League Two and Spartans in Scotland's League Two. Spartans' own website describes an Edinburgh club founded in 1951, with home matches at the Vanloq Community Stadium and a wider commitment to youth development, community outreach and local talent.

For Shrewsbury, the ownership process is continuing during an uneven league campaign. The club's official website records three wins, two draws and four defeats from its first nine League Two matches of 2026-27, with nine goals scored and 14 conceded. Those figures exclude cup ties and friendlies. Away from the results, the next acquisition update remains pending: Spartans said it would provide more information when able to do so.
