Shnaider beats Boulter in straight sets to reach Wuhan second round
Diana Shnaider knocked Katie Boulter out of the Wuhan Open on Tuesday, winning 6-3 6-1 to advance to the second round. BBC Sport reported that the first-round match lasted one hour and 30 minutes, with the Russian world number 13 pulling away after a competitive opening set.
Watch the highlights:
Boulter initially moved ahead by a break, according to Sky Sports, but could not protect that advantage against the tournament's 11th seed. Shnaider, a French Open semi-finalist, kept the British player under pressure on serve and proved the more consistent of the two. Boulter finished with just four games across the match despite her encouraging start.
The result continued a difficult run for Britain's number one, who is ranked 54th. BBC Sport reported that Boulter has won three of her nine WTA Tour singles matches since her first-round Wimbledon exit in June. Across this year's four Grand Slam tournaments, she managed two match victories, leaving Wuhan as another early departure in the closing stages of the season.
Their previous meetings had also gone Shnaider's way. The head-to-head record published by Tennis.com lists her 6-1 6-2 victory over Boulter at Hong Kong in November 2024 and a 2-6 6-3 6-2 win in London in June 2025. In that London encounter, Boulter won the opening set before Shnaider recovered; in Wuhan, the Russian completed the job without needing a deciding set.
Boulter's WTA tournament record nevertheless shows a title earlier this season in Ostrava, where she defeated Tamara Korpatsch 5-7 6-2 6-1 in the final. She also reached the semi-finals at Queen's, losing to Donna Vekic. Wuhan has remained a less successful stop: the WTA lists first-round defeats in both of Boulter's appearances, against Lesia Tsurenko in 2024 and now Shnaider in 2026.
The match also followed a bereavement for Boulter. BBC Sport reported that her grandfather, Brian, died last week and that she had paid tribute to him on social media before playing in Wuhan. Her brother James described their grandfather's support for her tennis career. Boulter's singles campaign at the tournament is now over.
