Shaw earns Manchester City draw as late Real Madrid goal is ruled out
Khadija Shaw scored in the 51st minute as Manchester City recovered from a half-time deficit to draw 1-1 with Real Madrid in the Women's Champions League on Thursday. The result at the Joie Stadium gave City two points from their first two league-phase matches, following their opening draw away to Bayern Munich, according to City's official match report.
Watch the highlights:
Linda Caicedo had put Madrid ahead in the 29th minute, completing a counterattack with a shot across goal. Madrid's own report described an open first half in which Mary Fowler headed against the crossbar before Felicia Schroder tested Ayaka Yamashita with a left-footed effort from inside the penalty area. The visitors carried their one-goal advantage into the interval.
City's equaliser came after Yui Hasegawa regained possession in midfield and supplied Shaw, who finished across the goalkeeper. Sky Sports reported that the hosts improved after the restart, but their efforts to move ahead brought no second goal. Shaw subsequently headed over from Lauren Hemp's cross, while Hasegawa sent a volley wide as City continued to create opportunities.
Madrid also threatened after conceding. Caicedo missed the target with a left-footed attempt shortly after Shaw's goal, according to the Spanish club's account. Yamashita later denied Irune Dorado with an important save. Neither side could convert those chances into a winning goal, leaving the contest level as it approached a dramatic conclusion.
Silvia Cristobal found the top corner late on, but the effort did not count. Sky Sports reported that referee Silvia Gasperotti had already stopped play after inadvertently preventing City's Beth Mead from reaching the ball. Madrid's players and coaching staff protested, but the decision stood and the visitors were unable to turn the late finish into three points.
The draw extended City's unbeaten start in all competitions to six matches, the club said. Shaw's goal also took her Women's Champions League total for City to eight, two more than previous club record-holder Georgia Stanway. City now switch back to domestic action against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, while Madrid's next challenge is Barcelona, according to Sky Sports.
