Shaw equaliser earns Manchester City 1-1 draw with Real Madrid
Khadija Shaw cancelled out Linda Caicedo's opener as Manchester City and Real Madrid shared the points at the Joie Stadium. City remain unbeaten this season.

Khadija Shaw scored in the 51st minute as Manchester City recovered to draw 1-1 with Real Madrid in the Women's Champions League at the Joie Stadium on Thursday. City's official match summary confirmed that the result preserved their unbeaten start to the 2026-27 season after Linda Caicedo had put the visitors ahead in the 29th minute.

Watch the highlights:

Real Madrid carried a threat through Caicedo and Felicia Schroder, while City also had opportunities before the interval. BBC Sport reported that Mary Fowler headed against the crossbar and Shaw had a looping header tipped over. Caicedo's opening goal nevertheless meant the hosts went into the break needing a response.

The equaliser followed pressure on Madrid's attempts to move the ball out from defence. According to AS, Yui Hasegawa won possession high up the pitch and found Shaw, who finished to bring City level. The goal came six minutes after the restart, cancelling out the advantage Madrid had held at half-time.

Both teams continued to create opportunities after that. BBC Sport reported missed chances for Lauren Hemp, Hasegawa and Beth Mead, while Caicedo shot wide after Madrid capitalised on a mistake by substitute Grace Clinton. City introduced Sam Coffey during the second half, with the midfielder adding intensity, but the home side could not convert their improved performance into a winning goal.

Madrid also had a late moment of frustration when Silvia Cristobal sent a shot into the top corner but it did not count. El Pais reported that the incident came in the 88th minute and involved the referee's position obstructing Mead. BBC Sport's live account clarified that the whistle had already sounded before Cristobal struck the ball, leaving the score unchanged.

The draw leaves both clubs with two points from two league-phase matches, according to BBC Sport. City had opened with a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich and remain without a European win this season. They host Paris St-Germain next on 29 October, with a Women's Super League meeting against Arsenal coming first on Sunday.
