Shankland Penalty Gives Rangers 1-0 Win at Aberdeen

Lawrence Shankland converted a second-half penalty as Rangers earned a 1-0 Scottish Premiership victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie. The Guardian, carrying a Press Association report, said the Rangers captain scored in the 69th minute to give manager Derek McInnes a welcome result after a difficult opening stretch of the season.

Rangers arrived under pressure following an unsettled start marked by changes in formation and personnel, elimination from two European competitions and disappointing domestic results. The report said the visitors produced a better display than in many of their recent matches, although their narrow advantage remained vulnerable until the final whistle.

The decisive chance came when Djeidi Gassama won a penalty and Shankland, a former Aberdeen player, took responsibility from the spot. His conversion separated the sides and secured three points for the Glasgow club. Rangers also gave a debut to South Korean winger Kim Min-su, who joined from Girona on a four-year contract and was replaced during the second half.

Aberdeen thought they had drawn level in the 81st minute when captain Kevin Nisbet put the ball into the Rangers net. The effort did not stand, however, because Nisbet was judged to have pushed full-back Dujon Sterling before scoring. That decision preserved Rangers’ lead through the closing stages.

The result offered McInnes some relief while he continues to reshape the side. According to the report, Rangers have brought in 12 players since he arrived from Hearts in the summer. Kim was among the new arrivals and performed well on his first appearance, but the victory was built around Shankland’s penalty and the defense’s ability to protect a one-goal margin.
