Shane Lowry joins McIlroy at Boston in first TGL trade
Shane Lowry will join Rory McIlroy at Boston Common Golf for the 2027 TGL season after becoming the first player traded in the league's history. Boston announced the acquisition from The Bay Golf Club on Monday, bringing the two Irish golfers together on the same franchise as the competition prepares for its third season.
Watch the highlights:
According to TGL's explanation of the transaction, The Bay receives Boston's fourth-round selection in the roster-building process, commercial considerations and the right to swap one selection position with Boston during one of the next three offseasons. That last element is a future swap right, rather than an unconditional extra pick. The league did not give a monetary value for the commercial component.
BBC Sport reported that Lowry, 39, had spent the league's opening two seasons with The Bay. The 2019 Open champion also won the Irish Open at Doonbeg in September. Boston's previous-season group featured McIlroy alongside Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama; the full set of five-player rosters is scheduled to be confirmed on October 20, according to TGL.
The move renews a successful partnership outside the league. The PGA Tour's account of the announcement noted that Lowry and McIlroy won the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans together. Lowry has also played in three Ryder Cups, helping Europe win in 2023 and retain the trophy in 2025. Those results give the pair experience of winning together in team competition.
McIlroy welcomed the signing by highlighting Lowry's ability and commitment to his teammates, BBC Sport reported. Lowry said playing alongside McIlroy made the switch particularly appealing and identified a championship for Boston as his objective. McIlroy co-founded the technology-based golf competition with Tiger Woods and Mike McCarley.
The trade accompanies wider changes for 2027. Motor City Golf Club becomes TGL's seventh team, with Brooks Koepka and Jackson Koivun among its players. Each club's squad expands from four golfers to five, although only three will compete in any match at SoFi Center. TGL says the larger squads will provide more options when selecting lineups and managing player availability.
