Shane Lowry wins Irish Open by record 11 shots at Doonbeg

Shane Lowry won the Irish Open by a record 11 strokes on Sunday, completing a dominant week at Doonbeg with a seven-under-par 63. According to BBC Sport's report, the Irishman finished on 23 under to secure his first individual title since September 2022. Patrick Reed and Joaquin Niemann were his nearest challengers, sharing second place on 12 under.

The victory was Lowry's second in his national open, coming 17 years after his first. Now 39, he put together rounds of 67, 62, 65 and 63 for a tournament-record total of 257 at Trump International Golf Links in County Clare. His Friday 62 also established a course record and helped put him in command heading into the weekend.

Lowry began the final round four shots ahead of Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen, but quickly extended his advantage. Four birdies in his opening eight holes took him to 20 under, with a 43-foot putt for birdie at the seventh among the decisive moments. A bogey at the ninth was his only dropped shot of the round, and he recovered immediately with a birdie at the 10th.

Further birdies followed at the 14th and 15th before Lowry finished with another long-range putt, holing from 29 feet at the last. He recorded eight birdies overall on a day when the chasing players could not close the gap. The result followed missed opportunities at the Dubai Invitational and the Cognizant Classic in Florida earlier this year, making this a significant breakthrough after those disappointments.

Speaking after the win, Lowry described the difficulties he had experienced on the course this season and acknowledged his family's support, BBC Sport reported. The 2019 Open champion also spoke about his happiness at being able to take a trophy home to his children. His emotional finish came in front of thousands of spectators celebrating a home winner.

Behind the leading three, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen also shot 63 to finish fourth on 11 under. Tom McKibbin and Guido De Leo shared fifth at 10 under. Defending champion Rory McIlroy closed with a 67 and tied for 41st, 22 strokes behind Lowry. Reed's runner-up finish will extend his advantage over McIlroy in the season-long Race to Dubai standings.
