Shane Lowry moves four clear at Irish Open after third-round 65

Shane Lowry will begin the Irish Open's final round with a four-shot advantage after recording a five-under-par 65 at Doonbeg on Saturday. BBC Sport reported that the Irishman strengthened his position despite Olesen briefly drawing level during the third round.

Putting was central to Lowry's response at Trump International Golf Links in County Clare. He needed just one putt on each of the final nine greens, according to the BBC. Afterwards, he said he was reading the lines well and getting the ball started as intended, while hoping that form would continue.

Olesen finished with a bogey and signed for 66 as he pursued a first DP World Tour victory. Joaquin Niemann also shot 66 to occupy third place outright. Defending champion Rory McIlroy returned a 74, while two-time Irish Open winner Jon Rahm recorded 72.

Lowry had established his advantage with Friday's course-record 62. Golf Channel reported that he reached the turn in 30 after birdies at the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes. Two more followed at the 11th and 12th, taking him to eight under for the round with six holes remaining. A three-putt bogey on the 13th interrupted that run, before another birdie arrived at the 15th.

He then completed the second round with three pars to stand at 11 under overall. Friday's scoring came in calmer winds than those encountered during the opening round, Golf Channel reported. Olesen's 64 that day had put him three shots behind Lowry at halfway, establishing the contest that continued at the top of the leaderboard on Saturday.

The tournament also carries a personal connection for Lowry, who won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009. In his comments after Friday's round, reported by Golf Channel, he credited the home spectators for their support and described his enjoyment of the day. He nevertheless stressed that considerable work remained, acknowledging both his strong position and the challenge of the weekend ahead.
