Lowry shoots 65 to build four-shot Irish Open lead

Shane Lowry extended his Irish Open advantage to four shots on Saturday, shooting a five-under-par 65 at Doonbeg to reach 16 under with one round remaining. BBC Sport reported that the Irishman needed just one putt on every back-nine green, helping him move further clear after starting the day with a three-shot cushion.

Jacob Skov Olesen stood second on 12 under after a 66. AS reported that the Dane briefly caught Lowry after an eagle and three birdies on the front nine. He then went without a birdie before bogeying the last.

Lowry's response included birdies at the 10th, 13th and 15th, alongside important par saves. BBC Sport reported that he had already made two birdies in his first four holes, then recovered from a bogey at the fifth with another birdie at the eighth. His putting helped preserve the lead through the closing stretch.

The separation from the rest of the field was larger still. Joaquin Niemann occupied third place at nine under after matching Olesen's 66, seven strokes behind Lowry. Tom McKibbin and Daniel Rodrigues shared the next position at seven under, with Rodrigues also recording a 65. Defending champion Rory McIlroy shot 74 to finish the day two over.

Lowry had established the foundation for his lead on Friday. RTÉ reported that his course-record 62 contained nine birdies and took him to 11 under through two rounds. Haotong Li, Olesen and Niklas Norgaard were then tied for second on eight under, while McKibbin stood at five under after following an opening 68 with a 67.

That second round had also featured a 63 from Li, including an eagle at the fifth, according to RTÉ. Lowry's weekend advantage therefore began against a chasing group that had already demonstrated its ability to score low at the County Clare venue.

Lowry is pursuing a second Irish Open title, 17 years after winning as an amateur. BBC Sport identified the 2022 BMW PGA Championship as his most recent individual victory.
