Shadman unbeaten on 75 as Bangladesh rebuild against West Indies
Shadman Islam reached an unbeaten 75 as Bangladesh moved to 169 for three during the opening day of the first Test against West Indies in Mirpur on Wednesday. BBC Sport's live scorecard showed that total after 55.4 overs, with Towhid Hridoy alongside him on 32. The match was still in progress, and West Indies had yet to begin their first innings.
Watch the highlights:
Bangladesh's recovery followed an early setback after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto chose to bat at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. According to The Daily Star's opening-session report, Jayden Seales removed Tanzid Hasan for seven when the opener attempted a drive outside off stump and edged to Justin Greaves at second slip.
Shadman and Mominul Haque then added 59 for the second wicket. Mominul contributed 28 from 51 balls before advancing towards a Jomel Warrican delivery and sending a catch to Shamar Joseph at mid-off, The Daily Star reported. Bangladesh subsequently reached lunch at 96 for two after 29 overs, with Shadman on 42 and Shanto on 15. Shadman had struck five fours in his 80-ball morning innings.
Warrican struck again after the interval, dismissing Shanto lbw for 19 to leave Bangladesh 110 for three. Shadman and Hridoy had added 59 without being separated by the 55.4-over update. Shadman's innings had occupied 159 deliveries and included eight fours, while Hridoy had faced 62 balls and hit three boundaries as Bangladesh moved beyond the loss of their captain.
Hridoy's contribution came after his inclusion in a changed Bangladesh team. The Daily Star reported that he replaced the injured Mushfiqur Rahim, while Shoriful Islam came in for Ebadot Hossain. The hosts retained Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam, the three spinners who had featured in their recent one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.
At the same update, Warrican had two for 28 from 11 overs, while Seales had one for 14 from eight. Bangladesh still had seven wickets available as the fourth-wicket partnership continued.
