Shadab and Rauf rescue Pakistan from 154-9 to beat England in Lahore
Pakistan reached the ODI tri-series final after Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf completed an 89-run partnership for the last wicket to beat England by one wicket in Lahore on Sunday. Reuters reported that the hosts recovered from 154-9 while chasing 242, leaving England with three defeats from three matches in the competition.
Watch the highlights:
Shadab finished unbeaten on 113 from 96 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and five sixes. He had arrived with Pakistan already six wickets down for 103, but stayed through the remaining collapse and then carried the chase alongside Rauf. According to BBC Sport, his innings set a new record for a number-eight batter in a one-day international.
The decisive reprieve came with Shadab on 97 and Pakistan still needing 21. Gus Atkinson had him given out lbw, and players began shaking hands before the batter requested a review. BBC Sport reported that an inside edge overturned the decision. Rauf eventually hit debutant Henry Crocombe for the winning boundary, completing victory with 17 balls unused.
Rauf contributed seven not out from 19 balls, providing the support needed for Shadab to control most of the strike. Their stand lasted 80 deliveries and established an ODI record for a final-wicket partnership in a successful chase. England had been put in a strong position by Jamie Overton, whose figures of 3-43 came from bowling his full allocation of 10 overs in a single spell.
Earlier, England were dismissed for 241 in 46.4 overs despite Ben Duckett's 105. Shaheen Shah Afridi took 4-46, including the wickets of Tom Banton and Joe Root during England's early difficulties. Reuters reported that Duckett and Sam Curran added 93 for the fifth wicket, with Curran making 42. Atkinson ended unbeaten on 36, but England's total ultimately proved insufficient.
The result followed England's defeat by Sri Lanka three days earlier, when they were unable to defend a target of 430. Their elimination is not yet confirmed: BBC Sport reported that a Sri Lanka victory over Pakistan on Tuesday would end England's chances before their final group match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.
