Shadab Khan century seals Pakistan one-wicket comeback against England
Pakistan beat England by one wicket in Lahore after Shadab Khan's unbeaten 113 transformed a chase that had appeared almost over at 154-9. Chasing 242 in the one-day international tri-series, Pakistan reached 243-9 with 17 balls remaining. BBC Sport reported that Shadab and Haris Rauf added an unbeaten 89, setting a record for a winning last-wicket partnership in an ODI.
Watch the highlights:
Shadab's 96-ball innings was also the highest score by a number eight in the format, according to the BBC report. Rauf contributed seven runs, but his survival gave Shadab the opportunity to lead the recovery. Their partnership lasted 80 deliveries, with Shadab controlling the strike so effectively that the number 11 faced just 19 of them. England could not take the final wicket despite having left Pakistan needing another 88 when the pair came together.
The decisive reprieve came with Shadab on 97 and Pakistan still needing 22. He was given out lbw to Gus Atkinson after being struck by a low full toss, and players had already shaken hands before his review overturned the decision. The decision-review system detected an inside edge. Later, with 18 still required, Rauf also survived a run-out opportunity involving Tom Banton at mid-on.
Rauf eventually struck the winning boundary off debutant Henry Crocombe, having defended his first 18 deliveries. That finish completed a reversal after Jamie Overton had helped put England in control. Overton delivered his entire allocation of 10 overs in one spell and returned figures of 3-43, but Pakistan's final pair denied England the victory their earlier bowling had brought within reach.
England had been dismissed for 241 in 46.4 overs despite Ben Duckett's 105 from 111 balls. Only Duckett, Sam Curran and Atkinson passed 20, while Shaheen took 4-46 for Pakistan. The result followed England's defeat by Sri Lanka three days earlier, when they conceded 430, making this a second consecutive setback for Harry Brook's side.
England's place in the tri-series now depends on other results. A Sri Lanka victory over Pakistan on Tuesday would confirm their elimination before their final match against Sri Lanka on Thursday. For Pakistan, the Lahore win was secured by an unbeaten century, a successful review and a last-wicket partnership that England were unable to break.
