Shadab Khan hits unbeaten 113 as Pakistan beat England by one wicket
Pakistan recovered from 154-9 to beat England by one wicket in Lahore, with Shadab Khan finishing unbeaten on 113 in their one-day international tri-series match. According to BBC Sport, his partnership of 89 with Haris Rauf set a record for a successful ODI chase by the final pair. Pakistan reached 243-9 with 17 deliveries remaining after England were dismissed for 241.
Watch the highlights:
Shadab faced 96 balls and struck 13 fours and five sixes, producing what the BBC reported was the highest ODI score by a batter at number eight. He had come to the crease at 103-6 after missing Pakistan’s first two matches of the series. Rauf contributed seven runs, but his survival gave Shadab the support needed to complete the recovery.
The decisive partnership survived a late reversal when Shadab, on 97, was given out lbw to Gus Atkinson with Pakistan still needing 21. Players had begun shaking hands before the batter requested a review. The decision was overturned after technology detected an inside edge. Rauf eventually struck debutant Henry Crocombe for the winning four, having defended the first 18 deliveries he faced.
England’s innings had depended heavily on Ben Duckett, who scored 105 from 111 balls. Sam Curran and Atkinson were the only other England batters to pass 20, while Shaheen took 4-46 as the innings ended after 46.4 overs. Duckett’s century therefore provided the foundation of a total that England’s bowlers initially appeared capable of defending.
Jamie Overton returned 3-43, delivering his full allocation of 10 overs in one spell. England took nine wickets before Pakistan reached 155, but could not separate the last pair. Shadab and Rauf stayed together for 80 balls, with Rauf facing only 19 of them as his partner managed the strike. Their stand carried Pakistan from the brink of defeat to the winning target.
The result leaves England without a victory from three matches in the competition. It followed their defeat to Sri Lanka three days earlier, when they conceded 430. England are not yet mathematically eliminated: their exit will be confirmed if Sri Lanka beat Pakistan on Tuesday. Their remaining match against Sri Lanka is scheduled for Thursday.
