Seumanutafa's late try lifts Canada past England in Toronto
Canada beat England 24-21 at BMO Field as Shoshanah Seumanutafa scored the winning try. A crowd of 18,621 set a North American record for a stand-alone women's rugby match.

Canada beat England 24-21 at Toronto's BMO Field on Friday, with Shoshanah Seumanutafa scoring the decisive late try in their WXV Global Series match. According to World Rugby's match report, the replacement crossed in the corner to complete a comeback against the world champions after Canada had trailed at the interval.

Watch the highlights:

The result was England's first defeat since the 2022 World Cup final against New Zealand, the Canadian Press reported through Sportsnet. It also reversed the outcome of last year's World Cup final, which England won 33-13 against Canada. This time, the home side finished with four tries to England's three and protected a three-point advantage through the closing stages.

Savannah Bauder gave Canada the opening try, but England recovered before half-time. World Rugby reported that Laetitia Royer's yellow card left the hosts short-handed, and the visitors capitalised through Maddie Feaunati and Zoe Harrison. England's forward pressure helped turn a five-point deficit into a 14-5 lead at the break, leaving Canada needing another response after the restart.

Alysha Corrigan supplied it, scoring after a kick and chase to bring Canada back into contention. Sarah Bern then restored England's nine-point cushion, but DaLeaka Menin crossed to reduce the margin again. Menin was named player of the match, according to World Rugby. Seumanutafa's late finish then put Canada ahead, completing a second-half recovery that England could not overturn.

The Canadian Press reported an attendance of 18,621, a record for a stand-alone women's rugby match in North America. The previous mark was 11,453 for Canada's match against the United States in Ottawa in August 2025. Friday's fixture was also the Canadian women's team's first appearance at BMO Field, adding an attendance milestone to the result on the pitch.

Canada had already held England to a 26-26 draw in Exeter on September 19. Rugby Canada's report of that match confirmed that the draw ended England's 39-game winning streak. The teams are scheduled to meet again at TD Place in Ottawa on October 23, the third encounter in their autumn sequence after Exeter and Toronto.
