Sergio Garcia Issues Public Apology After Masters Driver Incident
Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia has apologized after breaking his driver in anger during the final round at Augusta, an outburst that left him without a club for the remainder of the round.

Sergio Garcia has publicly apologized after a moment of frustration at the Masters spiraled into one of the more talked-about incidents of the tournament week. The 2017 champion, playing alongside fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm during the final round at Augusta National, struck his tee shot on the par-five second hole into a bunker. What happened next drew sharp criticism from multiple directions.

Garcia slammed his driver into the turf twice in anger. When that proved insufficient, he struck a nearby cooler with the club. The impact snapped the head clean off. With the club now broken and no provision for replacement mid-round under the rules, Garcia played the rest of the round without a driver, a significant disadvantage on one of golf's longest courses.

Masters competitions committee chairman Geoff Yang issued a code-of-conduct warning on the fourth tee. By that point, Garcia's tournament had already unraveled. He went on to post a three-over-par 75, finishing the week at eight over par, third from last among the 54 players who made the cut. When asked what had gone wrong, the 46-year-old offered a blunt two-word assessment: bad golf.

In a statement posted to X, Garcia expressed remorse. I want to apologise for my actions on Sunday at the Masters tournament, he wrote. I respect and value everything that the Masters and Augusta National Golf Club is to golf. I regret the way I acted and it has no place in our game. It doesn't reflect the respect and appreciation I have for the Masters, the patrons, tournament officials and golf fans around the world.

The apology drew mixed reactions. While many accepted the statement at face value, others pointed to a pattern of on-course incidents throughout Garcia's career. His record at Augusta includes that emotional victory in 2017, but also several heated moments over the years that have drawn scrutiny.

Rory McIlroy won the tournament, becoming only the fourth player in history to win consecutive Masters titles, but the week's most memorable image outside the champion's circle was the sight of a former green jacket winner standing clubless on the tee.
