Selby Survives Decider as Top-10 Contenders Advance at English Open
Mark Selby edged Ricky Walden in a deciding frame while Judd Trump led a clean sweep for five top-10 players in Tuesday's English Open first-round matches.

Mark Selby survived a deciding frame while Judd Trump advanced with a whitewash as five top-10 players won their opening matches at the English Open in Brentwood on Tuesday. BBC Sport reported that Selby, Trump, Mark Williams, Wu Yize and Barry Hawkins all progressed to the second round.

Watch the highlights:

Selby, ranked second in the world, defeated Ricky Walden 4-3 after a match that changed direction more than once. Selby made breaks of 111 and 135 to move 2-1 ahead, but Walden took the next two frames and led 3-2. Selby forced a decider before closing the match with a break of 69, according to the BBC report.

Trump had a more direct route through, beating Northern Ireland's Jordan Brown 4-0. The victory set up a second-round meeting with Ashley Carty, who came through his own opener against Lei Peifan 4-3. Tournament results published by snooker.org recorded Trump's match as completed on Tuesday evening.

Williams was also taken to a deciding frame before defeating Thailand's Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon 4-3. The Welshman had led 3-1 before his opponent levelled the contest, but Williams secured the final frame and will next play Matthew Selt. Selt reached round two by beating Hossein Vafaei 4-1.

Wu and Hawkins completed the clean sweep for the top-10 players in Tuesday's first-round group. Wu beat fellow Chinese player Gao Yang 4-1 and is scheduled to face Xu Si, who edged Aaron Hill 4-3. Hawkins defeated China's Lyu Haotian 4-2 and was awaiting the winner of the Gary Wilson-Daniel Wells match when the BBC report was published.

The English Open is being staged at the Brentwood Centre from September 7 to 13. Selby's next opponent is China's Zhang Anda, while the other confirmed second-round pairings place Trump against Carty, Williams against Selt and Wu against Xu. Those results leave all five leading players from Tuesday's programme in contention after contrasting first-round tests, from Trump's shutout to the deciding-frame wins recorded by Selby and Williams.
