Seb Morgan Takes Four as Middlesex Restrict Durham on Opening Day

Seb Morgan took four wickets as Middlesex dismissed Durham for 252 before reaching 70-2 at the close of the opening day of their County Championship Division Two match at Chester-le-Street. The ECB Reporters’ Network, carried by BBC Sport, reported that Middlesex ended the day 182 runs behind, with Durham earning one point and the visitors three.

Durham, the division leaders, entered the fixture knowing that 17 points would secure promotion to the top tier. Middlesex chose to bowl first, and Durham’s openers Alex Lees and Ben McKinney began positively before Naavya Sharma had McKinney caught behind. Sharma then bowled Will Rhodes to give the visitors their second breakthrough.

Morgan changed the shape of the innings late in the morning session. Mayank Agarwal was caught behind for a 25-ball duck, and Graham Clark edged to second slip three deliveries later. After lunch, the 19-year-old Morgan removed captain Lees for 48, with wicketkeeper Harry Duke taking the catch following an inside edge.

Rain briefly interrupted Middlesex’s progress, but Ryan Higgins struck three times after play resumed. He dismissed Ollie Robinson leg before, had Kasey Aldridge caught behind and removed Brydon Carse with a catch at point. Morgan then claimed his fourth wicket when Colin Ackermann was caught behind, finishing with figures of 4-78. Higgins returned 3-63, while Sharma took 3-38.

Durham recovered through an important last-wicket partnership. Ben Raine and Callum Parkinson added 90, taking the total beyond 200 and forcing Middlesex to work for the final wicket. Raine completed his third half-century of the season and finished unbeaten on 58. Parkinson made 26 before Sharma trapped him leg before to close the innings at 252.

Middlesex had 19 overs to negotiate in reply. Sam Robson and Luke Hollman found early boundaries, but Carse had Hollman caught at third slip and later removed Robson for 26 through another edge to the same position. Durham also missed a run-out opportunity between those wickets. Nathan Fernandes and Max Holden survived the remaining pressure, leaving Middlesex on 70-2 and the match balanced after a day in which Morgan’s spell and Durham’s final-wicket resistance provided the decisive swings.
