Scott McTominay's Heart Procedure Successful, Napoli Confirm
Napoli say Scott McTominay has successfully undergone an ablation procedure in Manchester after a mild benign arrhythmia was identified. The Scotland midfielder will rest for about two weeks before returning to training.

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has undergone a successful heart procedure and is expected to resume training after approximately two weeks of rest, the Italian club confirmed on Tuesday. The Scotland international had an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital after the emergence of what Napoli previously described as a mild benign arrhythmia.

Watch the highlights:

BBC Sport reported Napoli's statement that the procedure was completed on Tuesday morning as planned and was a complete success. The club's update set out a short initial recovery period, saying McTominay will rest for around two weeks before he starts training again. Napoli did not announce a precise date for his return to competitive action.

The procedure followed Napoli's September 1 disclosure that McTominay would require corrective treatment using cardiac ablation. ANSA reported at the time that the issue was a mild benign arrhythmia and that the club expected him to become available again after the international break. That outline remains a forecast rather than a confirmed match-return date.

McTominay had already missed Napoli's league match against Inter Milan while the medical issue was being addressed. Football Italia reported that the midfielder is also expected to be unavailable for Napoli's next three fixtures, including their Champions League meeting with Arsenal, although Napoli's latest medical statement focused on rest and a return to training rather than naming matches he will miss.

The 29-year-old joined Napoli from Manchester United in August 2024 and quickly became a central figure for the club. He scored 12 goals in 34 Serie A appearances during his first season in Italy as Napoli won the league title, and he was named the competition's most valuable player for the 2024-25 campaign. He later received the Serie A player of the year award.

For Napoli and Scotland, the immediate timetable is now based on McTominay completing the club-prescribed rest period before resuming training. Any subsequent return to matches will depend on his recovery and medical clearance. The confirmed development is that the planned ablation was successful; neither the club nor its medical update guaranteed that he will play on a particular date.
