Scotland Open Fukofuka Era With Statement 24-19 Win Over Wales in Six Nations
Scotland began life under new head coach Sione Fukofuka on a winning note, holding off a determined Wales side 24-19 in Cardiff to claim top spot in the Women's Six Nations standings after round one.

A new chapter for Scottish women's rugby began in the best possible fashion. Scotland traveled to Cardiff and walked away with a 24-19 victory over Wales on Saturday, giving head coach Sione Fukofuka the perfect start to his tenure.

Wales looked organized and disciplined early on, with new defence coach Tyrone Holmes having clearly left his mark. They were caught narrow in midfield, however, allowing Emma Orr to lead a devastating counter-attack. The ball was moved wide to Rhona Lloyd, who unselfishly passed back inside for Rollie to cross and open the scoring.

The hosts responded with a swift counter of their own. From a line-out, Kelsey Jones fed the rolling maul and drove over to dot down, drawing Wales level. The try proved doubly damaging when prop Leah Bartlett was sent to the sin bin on her 50th Wales appearance for an infringement during the build-up.

Wales continued to press and were rewarded when Tuipulotu barrelled over from close range after a Gwen Crabb turnover gave them field position. They looked a different outfit from the side that was physically dominated by Scotland at last summer's World Cup, with teenage debutant Jorja Aiono particularly impressive with ball in hand.

Scotland clawed back to within two points through a Nelson penalty and finished the half strongly, though they squandered a golden opportunity when Lana Skeldon was penalised for a dummy throw at a five-metre line-out.

The visitors took the lead early in the second half when Wales' backline failed to deal with a speculative kick, allowing Campbell to dot down on her first Scotland appearance since 2022. That joy was short-lived, however, as Emma Orr departed with a concerning injury, Evie Wills coming on in her place.

Scotland's third try was the pick of the match. Replacement Scott read Meryl Smith's pinpoint kick to perfection, plucked it from the air, and stepped Wales fullback Kayleigh Powell to stretch the lead to 24-12.

Wales refused to fold. Donna Rose charged through the defence and, after several recycled phases, it was captain Williams who crashed over under the posts. Keira Bevan's conversion reduced the gap to five points.

With the scoreline reading 24-19, Wales pressed hard in the dying minutes and earned a penalty near Scotland's line. The ensuing line-out was fumbled, and Scotland hung on for a famous victory. Despite a 10th defeat in 11 Tests for Wales head coach Sean Lynn, there were clear signs of progress from the World Cup showing, and a losing bonus point may yet prove significant in the final standings.
