Schalke Return to Bundesliga After Three-Year Absence

Schalke have returned to the Bundesliga after three seasons in Germany’s second tier, restoring one of the country’s best-supported clubs to the top flight. BBC Sport reported that the comeback follows a difficult cycle of two promotions and two relegations in six years, during which financial pressure and poor league finishes threatened to deepen the club’s decline.

Their first match back ended in a 3-0 defeat at Augsburg, but the travelling support remained behind after the final whistle. About 6,000 Schalke fans had made the trip. At home, the club continues to fill the 62,000-capacity Veltins-Arena, a level of backing that endured while the team struggled outside the Bundesliga.

Schalke’s problems accelerated when they dropped into Bundesliga 2 for the first time in 21 years. BBC Sport said heavy spending, failure to qualify for European competition and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic contributed to major debts and fears of insolvency. An immediate promotion in 2022 proved temporary: Schalke were relegated again one year later, then finished 10th and 14th in their next two second-tier campaigns.

The turnaround took shape after the 14th-place finish, when former Plymouth Argyle manager Miron Muslic joined the club. His high-pressing approach emphasized commitment and effort, while helping to rebuild belief around the squad. Local reporters Robin Haack and Andreas Ernst told BBC Sport that Muslic became the public face of the promotion and that Frank Baumann’s work behind the scenes was equally important.

Baumann, a former Werder Bremen director of football and Germany international, arrived in June 2025 with little money available for rebuilding. The squad nevertheless gained experience through former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, who has scored eight goals in his first 13 appearances, including two in a DFB-Pokal victory this season. Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius also revived his career to become a regular and an important figure under Muslic.

Schalke’s stated goal is stability rather than an immediate return to past heights. Muslic told the BBC’s Euro Leagues podcast that the club recognizes both its history and its current position, describing the approach as humble but ambitious. After the loss at Augsburg, the central task is clear: remain in the Bundesliga and turn a hard-earned promotion into a sustainable recovery.
