Sawe Smashes Two-Hour Barrier to Make History at London Marathon
Kenya's Samson Sawe has made history at the 2026 London Marathon, becoming the first runner ever to complete the 26.2-mile course in under two hours. The 28-year-old crossed the finish line on The Mall in an astonishing time of 1:59:47, shattering the previous world record of 2:01:09 set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023.
Watch the highlights:
Sawe's performance was nothing short of dominant from the start. He went through the first 10km in 28:32, already 45 seconds inside world-record pace. The Kenyan maintained his relentless rhythm through the iconic landmarks of central London, passing half-marathon in 59:52 before accelerating in the final 10 miles.
"I dreamed of this moment since I was a child watching Haile Gebrselassie," Sawe said through tears after crossing the line. "To do it here in London, in front of these crowds, is beyond anything I imagined. The pacemakers were incredible, and the support carried me through the difficult moments."
The race conditions were near-perfect, with temperatures around 12°C and minimal wind. A strong contingent of pacemakers, including three Olympic medalists, worked in rotating shifts to shield Sawe from the wind and maintain the punishing schedule required for sub-two hours.
Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa finished second in 2:04:23, while British favorite Adam Gemili placed an impressive fifth in 2:06:41, sparking wild celebrations among the home crowd.
Organizers confirmed Sawe's time will be submitted to World Athletics for ratification. The achievement marks the fourth sub-two-hour marathon in history, with all four occurrences coming since 2022, suggesting a new era of human performance.
