Saracens confirm Olly Hartley broke arm in Leicester victory
Joe Shaw has confirmed that Olly Hartley broke his arm during Saracens' 40-38 win at Leicester. The injury forced an early reshuffle in a match the visitors won despite a second-half red card.

Saracens centre Olly Hartley broke his arm during Sunday's 40-38 victory at Leicester, head coach Joe Shaw confirmed on Wednesday, according to BBC Sport. Hartley left the field after 13 minutes at Welford Road, sustaining another significant injury following the knee reconstruction he required after a match against Gloucester in April 2024.

Watch the highlights:

Shaw described the emotional effect of seeing a teammate seriously hurt in the first league game of the season. Saracens led 14-0 when Hartley went off, but Leicester cut that advantage to 14-12 over the following 13 minutes. Shaw praised the players' leadership and their calm response as they reorganised after the injury.

BBC Sport's match report detailed how the disruption changed Saracens' deployment of their replacements. With six forwards and two backs on the bench, Hartley's departure and Tobias Elliott's temporary removal for a head injury assessment brought England flanker Ben Earl into the centre. Earl later returned to the back row after Alfie Barbeary went off at half-time, and also scored a try.

The visitors faced another major adjustment when Nick Isiekwe received a 20-minute red card in the 54th minute for a high tackle on Freddie Steward. Leicester moved in front through Adam Radwan, but Rotimi Segun scored twice while Saracens were short-handed. His second try, seven minutes from the end, put the visitors ahead again after replacement James Thompson had restored Leicester's lead.

Saracens returned to their full complement when Eoghan Clarke replaced Isiekwe after the sanction expired. They held on despite Gabriel Hamer-Webb's hat-trick for Leicester in a contest featuring 12 tries. Scrum-half Tomos Williams was named man of the match as Saracens opened their league campaign with an away win.

Wednesday's update also left questions over director of rugby Brendan Venter's media duties unresolved. BBC Sport reported that he missed the press conference after also being absent from the league's pre-season launch and media duties around the Leicester game. Shaw declined to say whether or when Venter would resume speaking to reporters, leaving the club to address that issue.
