San Diego Clippers Secure First G League Playoff Berth Since 2022 Despite Season Finale Loss
Despite falling 118-102 to Stockton Kings in season finale, San Diego Clippers clinch G League playoff spot in franchise's inaugural season under new city identity.

The San Diego Clippers accomplished their primary objective Saturday night despite suffering a disappointing 118-102 defeat to the Stockton Kings in their regular season finale, securing the franchise's first G League playoff berth since 2021-22 and marking a significant milestone in their debut season representing San Diego.

Head coach Paul Hewitt emphasized the bigger picture following the loss, recognizing that reaching the postseason represented the culmination of a season-long effort that required persistence through constant roster turnover and competitive challenges.

"It's nice to be in it," Hewitt reflected after the game. "We got a little help today, obviously, but our guys gave themselves a chance. Winning the game yesterday put us in position. That's all you can ask for at this time of year."

The defeat itself mirrored much of San Diego's season - competitive efforts that fell just short when it mattered most. The Clippers entered the fourth quarter within striking distance before Stockton used a decisive late run to pull away and secure the victory.

Despite the disappointing finish, Hewitt praised his team's commitment throughout a campaign marked by frequent personnel changes that could have derailed lesser organizations.

"These guys hung with it," the coach explained. "Especially the guys that have been here the whole year... they stuck to the script and gave ourselves a chance. Their level of commitment is something I certainly appreciate."

The core group that anchored San Diego's playoff push included guard Jahmyl Telfort, TyTy Washington Jr., and forward Zach Freemantle, who provided stability and leadership as roster spots constantly shifted around them.

"Just having those guys was really helpful the whole season," Telfort said. "I've known Zach for a couple years, and me and TyTy got close too. Playing with them is a blessing for sure."

Hewitt particularly appreciated how his veteran players maintained focus on team success rather than individual statistics despite the uncertainty surrounding roster composition.

"It's the easiest thing in the world when there's turnover to just go out there and play for yourself, but for the most part our guys didn't do that," he noted.

The playoff qualification carries additional significance for an organization that recently relocated and completed its second season at Oceanside's Frontwave Arena. Building community connections and establishing roots in Southern California represents a long-term investment that playoff basketball can accelerate.

"We absolutely appreciate the people that come out," Hewitt said. "The opportunity to play in this building, we couldn't ask for more. I hope they enjoy this because we appreciate them."

Telfort outlined the team's straightforward approach heading into postseason competition, emphasizing the universal playoff mentality that levels all previous accomplishments.

"Just win," he said when asked about the team's playoff mindset. "Do everything in your power to win the game. Making the playoffs was a goal of ours, and we did. Now it's just taking it one game at a time."

Hewitt echoed that simplicity when discussing preparation for the upcoming challenge, recognizing that regular season success means nothing once playoff basketball begins.

"I don't think there's much to be said," he explained. "It's a playoff game... everybody's 0-0 now."

The Clippers now face the daunting task of traveling to El Segundo to challenge the top-seeded South Bay Lakers in the opening round. The series opener is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st, at UCLA Health Training Center with a 7pm tipoff.

Despite the challenging matchup against the conference's best team, Hewitt expressed confidence in his squad's chances based on their regular season encounters.

"We've played them well this year," he noted. "They're playing great basketball, but so are we when we're right."

The playoff berth represents validation for an organization building its identity in a new market while developing talent for the NBA level. Success in the postseason could provide momentum for future seasons and strengthen community ties that will prove crucial for long-term sustainability.
