Sam Hain century puts Warwickshire within reach of County Championship title

Sam Hain's 142 moved Warwickshire closer to a ninth County Championship title as they took control against Leicestershire on the second day at Edgbaston. According to BBC Sport's match report, the hosts made 372 before reducing the visitors to 55-3 in their second innings. Leicestershire remained 192 runs behind at the close, while a draw would now be enough for Warwickshire to secure the championship.

Hain faced 301 deliveries for his 21st first-class century, anchoring an innings that gave Warwickshire a first-innings advantage of 247. He also reached 1,000 first-class runs for the season for only the second time. His main support came from captain Ed Barnard, whose 88 formed part of a fifth-wicket partnership worth 165 across 50 overs in conditions that favoured seam bowling.

Warwickshire had resumed on 130-4, already five runs ahead of Leicestershire's first-innings 125. Hain and Barnard added 51 without losing a wicket during a morning session shortened by bad light. Their stand continued after lunch, taking the lead to 126 before Barnard edged a wide delivery from Ben Green while attempting a drive, falling 12 runs short of a century.

Chris Woakes followed quickly, chipping his second delivery to mid-on, but Warwickshire continued to add runs through their lower order. Kai Smith and Manny Suthar contributed before both fell to Hull. Ethan Bamber also provided support before being bowled by Patel, and Hain shared another 35 with last man Olly Hannon-Dalby to extend the lead further before the innings ended.

Leicestershire's reply brought contrasting fortunes for their top order. Sol Budinger made an unbeaten 43 from 36 balls, but Bamber removed Sheridon Gumbs and Rishi Patel in the space of three deliveries. Those two wickets took the Warwickshire seamer's tally for the season to 66 and left the visitors struggling to build a response despite Budinger's rapid scoring.

After another interruption for bad light, Woakes trapped Steve Eskinazi lbw to leave Leicestershire three wickets down at stumps. The visitors, who are threatened with relegation, still had a sizeable deficit to erase. Warwickshire had not yet sealed the title, but Hain's century and the late wickets left them firmly in command heading into the third day.
