Saka Strike Gives Arsenal 1-0 Win at Aston Villa

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park, extending the champions' winning start to the Premier League season. The Guardian reported that Saka struck shortly before the hour, while Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was not seriously tested by Unai Emery's side.

The decisive move developed after Arsenal slowed possession before finding Eberechi Eze in space. Eze released Riccardo Calafiori on an underlapping run, and the Italy defender sent the ball across the six-yard area. Saka reached the delivery ahead of Ian Maatsen and forced it into the net to put the visitors in front.

Arsenal had seen a penalty decision overturned five minutes earlier. Referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the spot after Maatsen caught Saka as the winger chased Declan Rice's pass, but a VAR review determined that the contact occurred outside the penalty area. Martin Odegaard took the resulting free-kick and hit the side netting.

Villa had shown greater cohesion than in their opening defeat at Brighton and created the clearer first-half threats. Emi Buendia struck the crossbar after Boubacar Kamara won possession, while debutant Nicolas Jackson dispossessed Gabriel Magalhaes and delivered a cross for George Hemmings, who could not convert from close range. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also made his Villa debut and produced an important second-half stop from Kai Havertz, although the Arsenal forward was later flagged offside.

Emery introduced Bruno Guimaraes, Alejandro Garnacho and debutant Aaron Wan-Bissaka as Villa searched for an equaliser. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also turned to his bench, giving Ezri Konsa a debut against his former club as the visitors protected their advantage. Villa pushed forward but could not find a way through Arsenal's defence.

The defeat left Villa without a goal after their first two league games, the first time they have opened a season with two scoreless losses since 2002, according to The Guardian. Arsenal, meanwhile, secured another victory without producing a dominant performance, with Saka's intervention and a disciplined defensive finish proving enough.
