Sabalenka Cruises Past Rybakina and Into Madrid Open Quarter-Finals as Swiatek Withdraws Ill
Aryna Sabalenka underlined her status as the favourite for the French Open with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elena Rybakina at the Madrid Open. The world number two's clinical performance secured her place in the quarter-finals and sent a clear message to her rivals ahead of Roland Garros. Sabalenka's powerful baseline game proved too much for Rybakina, who struggled to cope with the Belarusian's relentless aggression.
The match lasted just 78 minutes, with Sabalenka winning 78 percent of points on her first serve. Her return game was equally impressive, breaking Rybakina's serve four times throughout the contest. The 26-year-old has now won 14 consecutive sets on clay this season, highlighting her remarkable consistency on the surface.
Meanwhile, the tournament was rocked by Iga Swiatek's withdrawal due to illness. The world number one, who had been struggling with a respiratory infection, was forced to pull out before her fourth-round match against Madison Keys. The Polish star's absence represents a significant blow to the event and raises questions about her fitness heading into the French Open.
Sabalenka will face either Paula Badosa or Qinwen Zheng in the last eight. The Belarusian has won both previous meetings against Badosa this season and will be confident of extending her winning streak. With Swiatek's withdrawal, Sabalenka now has an excellent opportunity to claim the Madrid Open title and strengthen her claim for the top ranking spot.
