Sabalenka Cruises into Madrid Open Last 16 While Ill Swiatek Withdraws
Aryna Sabalenka continued her imperious form at the Madrid Open on Friday, cruising into the last 16 with a commanding straight-sets victory over Dayana Yastremska. The world number one, who has been in scintillating form this season, showcased why she remains the favorite for the clay-court major with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph that lasted just over an hour.
Watch the highlights:
The Belarusian's serve was particularly devastating, firing seven aces and winning 78% of points on her first serve. She broke Yastremska's serve four times across the match and showed no signs of the back issues that had plagued her earlier in the season. "I'm feeling great on court," Sabalenka said in her on-court interview. "Each match I play here, I'm getting more confident and that's exactly what I need before the French Open."
Meanwhile, the tournament suffered a significant blow as Iga Swiatek was forced to withdraw due to illness. The Polish star, who has won the French Open three times, was scheduled to face Jelena Ostapenko in the third round but pulled out before the match. Tournament officials confirmed Swiatek had been battling a fever since her second-round victory and was advised by medical staff to rest.
"It's disappointing to withdraw, especially as I was feeling better after my second match," Swiatek said in a statement. "But my health comes first and I need to recover properly before the French Open." The withdrawal opens up the bottom half of the draw significantly, with Sabalenka now emerging as an even clearer favorite.
Other notable results from Friday include Elena Rybakina's impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory over Zhang Shuai, while Madison Keys also progressed with a straight-sets win. The Madrid Open continues through the weekend with the finals scheduled for next Sunday.
