Sabalenka Races Into Cincinnati Last 16 as Medvedev Squanders Match Points
Aryna Sabalenka swept past Wang Xinyu in 54 minutes at the Cincinnati Open, while Brandon Nakashima saved three match points to eliminate Daniil Medvedev.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the Cincinnati Open fourth round with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over China's Wang Xinyu, completing the match in 54 minutes. BBC Sport reported that the Belarusian controlled the contest throughout and did not face a break point as she secured a place in the last 16.

Watch the highlights:

Sabalenka dropped only six points across her eight service games. She finished with 17 winners and five unforced errors, producing a sharply controlled performance after less convincing recent results. The win followed her fourth-round exit at Wimbledon and an early defeat in Canada the previous week.

The result also kept Sabalenka moving forward in a tournament with implications for the top of the WTA rankings. She entered Cincinnati 354 points ahead of Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina. According to BBC Sport, Rybakina must reach the final to have a chance of overtaking her, while a Sabalenka quarter-final appearance would require Rybakina to win the title to rise to number one. Sabalenka will next face Czech player Sara Bejlek for a quarter-final place.

Sabalenka is also preparing to defend her US Open crown when the major begins on August 30. She has won the past two women's singles titles in New York and is seeking a third in succession, a feat no woman has achieved since Serena Williams completed three consecutive triumphs in 2014.

In the men's draw, fourth seed Daniil Medvedev was eliminated by American Brandon Nakashima despite holding three match points. Medvedev recovered from 5-2 down in the opening set and won it on a tie-break, then created his opportunities to close the match while Nakashima served at 5-4 in the second set. Nakashima saved all three, won the second-set tie-break and dominated the decider for a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory.

Medvedev's frustration became visible after those missed chances. BBC Sport reported that he threw his racquet into electronic boards behind the court, briefly breaking the equipment, then kicked the screen and knocked over microphones. The Russian committed 51 unforced errors as Nakashima stayed in the contest and completed the comeback.
