Russo penalty seals Arsenal comeback win over Tottenham in WSL derby
Arsenal recovered from an early deficit to beat Tottenham 2-1, ending a five-match winless league run. Georgia Stanway equalised before Alessia Russo converted the decisive penalty.

Arsenal beat Tottenham 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, October 24, with Alessia Russo's second-half penalty completing a comeback in the Women's Super League. Sky Sports reported that the victory ended Arsenal's five-match winless league run and delivered their second WSL success of the season.

Watch the highlights:

The result followed a difficult opening six league matches for Renée Slegers' side. According to the WSL's official pre-match account, Arsenal had scored only five goals in those fixtures, their second-worst start to a WSL campaign behind 2014. Tottenham also arrived needing a response: despite scoring 18 league goals, they had conceded six in each of their previous two league games.

Cathinka Tandberg put Spurs ahead after 13 minutes, heading in Victoria Pelova's corner. Arsenal responded in the 17th minute through Georgia Stanway. Arseblog's match report described Taylor Hinds finding Russo on the left before the forward supplied the pass for Stanway to finish. The equaliser restored parity quickly, but Arsenal were unable to add another goal before the interval.

The visitors then threatened through Caitlin Foord and Russo after the restart. Foord supplied a ball into the area and Lize Kop kept out Russo's first-time effort. From the ensuing corner, Leah Williamson helped the ball on and Lisa Baum struck the post, according to Arseblog. A subsequent Tottenham clearance hit substitute Ella Morris's outstretched arm, prompting the penalty award.

Russo converted in the 56th minute, sending Kop the other way to give Arsenal the lead. Sky Sports reported that Morris had entered the match after Alice Sombath was taken off on a stretcher. Arsenal protected their advantage through the remainder of the contest, ensuring Tottenham's early lead did not translate into points in the derby.

Speaking to BBC Sport in comments carried by Sky Sports, Slegers welcomed the reward for her players' work during a difficult period but stressed that further results were needed. She highlighted their coordinated pressing, spells of possession and chances created. For Arsenal, the immediate outcome was a return to league victories after five unsuccessful attempts.
