Russo double gives Arsenal 2-1 WSL win over Liverpool at Anfield
Alessia Russo scored both Arsenal goals in a 2-1 Women's Super League victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Liverpool's official match report confirmed that Beata Olsson equalised between Russo's opener and her header just before half-time, which ultimately settled the contest.
Watch the highlights:
Arsenal's selection included a return to the starting side for Kim Little, alongside Georgia Stanway in midfield. Arseblog News reported that Caitlin Foord and Lisa Baum were selected either side of Olivia Smith, with Russo playing behind the forward. Misa Rodriguez started in goal, while Emily Fox, Leah Williamson, Steph Catley and Taylor Hinds formed the defence. Daphne van Domselaar was among the substitutes, alongside academy striker Mia Dixon.
Fox supplied the cross for Russo's opening goal after advancing down the right. Liverpool answered when Natalia Ramos found Olsson with a pass behind the defence. Olsson held off Williamson and finished into the bottom-left corner to bring the hosts level.
Liverpool then had a potential second goal ruled out when Jenna Clark converted following a corner, with Vivien Endemann flagged offside. Arsenal regained the lead in the 45th minute as Russo headed Baum's cross down into the net. There were no further goals after the interval.
Liverpool manager Gareth Taylor introduced Alice Bergstrom and Mao Itamura after the hour. Clark subsequently intercepted a Stanway delivery that threatened to give Russo another close-range chance. At the other end, Cornelia Kapocs sent a late volley wide after Itamura crossed into the middle.
Speaking to Sky Sports afterwards in comments published by Liverpool, Taylor said he was pleased with his team's performance despite the defeat. He felt both sides had found it too easy to play through each other before half-time and said Liverpool had discussed becoming more aggressive. Taylor credited Arsenal's defending and believed his side created enough second-half opportunities to earn something. He remained uncertain about the disallowed goal after briefly reviewing it, rather than offering a definitive verdict on the offside decision.
