Russo rescues Arsenal point as Aston Villa extend unbeaten run
Alessia Russo headed a late equaliser in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. Villa extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions.

Alessia Russo's late header earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa in the Women's Super League at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, November 1. Chasity Grant had given the visitors a first-half lead, but Russo converted Stina Blackstenius' cross in the closing stages to prevent a home defeat. Sky Sports reported the equaliser in the 85th minute.

Watch the highlights:

The result extended Villa's unbeaten sequence to eight matches across all competitions, according to the club's official report. They came within five minutes of taking all three points before Russo intervened. Arsenal, meanwhile, were unable to turn their greater attacking pressure into victory, with Villa defending a narrow advantage for much of the afternoon and eventually leaving with a point.

Arsenal had opportunities before falling behind. Arseblog's match report recorded saves by Akane Okuma from Caitlin Foord, Georgia Stanway and Taylor Hinds during the opening period. Russo also sent an effort narrowly wide. The visitors then made their breakthrough in the 25th minute, with Lynn Wilms releasing Grant, who cut back before shooting past the Arsenal goalkeeper.

Renee Slegers made two changes at the interval, introducing Emily Fox and Lisa Baum for Hinds and Geraldine Reuteler, according to Arseblog. Fox subsequently had a shot blocked after combining with Russo. Stanway later fired into the side netting, while Baum was unable to trouble Okuma with an effort following a blocked Steph Catley shot as Arsenal continued trying to recover.

The eventual equaliser came after another attacking substitution. Blackstenius replaced Kyra Cooney-Cross late in the match and supplied the cross that Russo headed home. Sky Sports credited Okuma with eight saves during Villa's defensive effort. Arsenal continued to pursue a winner after drawing level, but there was no second breakthrough to complete the turnaround before the final whistle.

For Villa, the draw kept their unbeaten run intact despite the disappointment of conceding so close to full-time. For Arsenal, Russo's intervention changed the outcome from defeat to a point, but their pressure brought only one goal. The contest finished level despite Grant's opener remaining Villa's only shot of the match, as reported by Sky Sports.
