Russell Martin accepts responsibility after Leicester lose 3-1 to Peterborough
Russell Martin accepted responsibility for Leicester City's latest home defeat after Peterborough United won 3-1 at King Power Stadium, while warning that a managerial change would not provide an immediate solution. BBC Sport reported his response on Monday following supporters' calls for his dismissal during Saturday's League One match.
Watch the highlights:
The result left Leicester 17th with nine points from eight league games and marked their third home league defeat of the campaign. Peterborough ended a six-match winless league run in Robbie Savage's first league game as manager. The former Leicester captain had been in charge of the visitors for just over a week.
According to the PA Media match report carried by BBC Sport, Owura Edwards opened the scoring in the 12th minute after cutting inside from the left. Harry Leonard made it 2-0 in the 36th minute from Bolu Shofowoke's pass, before Warren O'Hora diverted Ethan Williams' effort into his own net in the 44th minute.
Martin made three substitutions at half-time, but Leicester did not score until the 68th minute, when substitute Wes Burns supplied Emil Riis for a close-range finish. It was the home side's 20th attempt on goal. Peterborough goalkeeper Alex Bass later saved from Kamari Doyle, while Danny Ormerod went close to adding a fourth for the visitors.
Speaking after the match, Martin acknowledged that the team's performance was his responsibility and said he understood the supporters' anger. He also called for greater aggression from his players during difficult periods, saying they needed to compete more effectively when unable to control a game. The defeat followed a three-week international break.
Before kick-off, sporting director James McCarron had backed Martin in an interview with BBC Radio Leicester. McCarron said the club remained convinced by the appointment and wanted a team that controlled possession and territory. He pointed to 30 summer transfers as a reason the squad needed time to settle after successive relegations.
Midfielder John Lundstram subsequently told BBC Radio Leicester that anxiety was affecting the players at home. He said the pressure surrounding the club had made some players retreat into themselves and that their performances were below their capabilities. Leicester's starting side included academy graduates Will Alves, Louis Page and Olabade Aluko alongside experienced players including Lundstram and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
