Russell Domingo leaves Hampshire as search for new head coach begins
Russell Domingo has left his job as Hampshire head coach after one season, with the club beginning the process of finding a replacement. BBC Sport reported that the 52-year-old South African departed less than a year into the two-year agreement he signed when he succeeded Adi Birrell in December.
Watch the highlights:
His exit follows a season in which Hampshire lost their place in the County Championship's top division after 12 years. Their results in the shorter formats were mixed: the Hawks reached the T20 Blast final at Edgbaston, where Northamptonshire Steelbacks beat them, but did not get beyond the One-Day Cup group stage.
In a statement on Hampshire's website, reproduced by the BBC, Domingo said his attention would now turn to his coaching work in South Africa. He thanked the club for the opportunity and expressed appreciation for the players, staff and supporters, saying he had enjoyed his time there and the relationships formed during the season. He also expressed confidence in the club's future.
BBC Radio Solent's Hampshire commentator Kevan James reported that, in his understanding, the departure was unrelated to relegation. James identified the overlap between the South African and English domestic calendars as an issue: South Africa's season began in the second week of September and is scheduled to run until almost the end of April, cutting into the English campaign by nearly two months.
Domingo is also head coach of the Johannesburg-based Lions. According to James, he felt Hampshire needed a coach who could be present for at least the entire English season. That account provides context for the change, while Domingo's own statement focused on his South African commitments rather than offering a detailed explanation of the decision to leave.
Hampshire said recruitment was under way, and James reported that the club would look to make an appointment in the new year. After relegation in September, Domingo had described the side as being in transition and needing a reset before next season. The search for his successor now accompanies those preparations for a return to action in the Championship's second tier.
